The cathedral and Severi-church are the landmark of Erfurt. Both Catholic churches were built on a hillock and they tower above the City center. St. Mary's Cathedral (1154 beginning of the construction of a Romanesque basilica) extended and modified in the course of centuries; 1968 might be mentioned as the year of a temporary end of the building activities. St. Severi was built within 1148 and 1400. The church takes its origin from the foundation of a collegiate church in the 9th century.
